Little Things Make Big Things Happen

Mike Davis
It is basketball season, so I can’t help but quote the late John Wooden who, as head coach at UCLA, won ten NCAA national championships in just a dozen years. “It’s the details that are vital. Little things make big things happen,” he said.

Here at Colorado Academy, it’s the details of what takes place every day that add up to making big things happen here. It is not only the excellent teaching in our classrooms day-in and day-out, but it is the everyday details of a student performance, a portfolio show, an athletic game, or Town Hall presentation— and these things happen hundreds of times throughout a school year.

These co-curricular events and activities enrich the challenging work our students take on in the classroom. In the past few days, here are just a few of the things taking place on campus:

Our Second Grade students began a collaborative art and music project based on the work of Nick Cave and his highly creative Soundsuits. The project involves two CA alumnae and will culminate at our all-school Art Show in May.

Our Fourth Grade students were truly living history as they practiced for a full, filmed re-enactment of the Second Battle of Bull Run.

Our Middle School students were out in the community and around campus for a Service Learning Day during which they read to children at Knapp Elementary, helped to protect trees along the South Platte, and built benches on campus along Wright Field.

Our Upper School Choir Concert featured not only the singing, but also the musical arrangement work, of many of our students. (The high point for me was seeing the men's Fratelli group act out the James Bond theme.)

The Upper School Service Learning Day took our students to more than 20 different locations throughout the Denver Metro area – from the Urban Farm to World Vision. Our entire high school was out in the community helping others and making a difference.

Our Parent Association Multicultural event on Thursday night was a wonderful celebration of music, dance, cultures, countries, and food. Thanks to our very engaged parent community for planning and participating.

And that brings us back to basketball. The CA Boys Basketball Team, for the first time in history, will host several games of the state tournament starting Friday and continuing on Saturday. CA plays Friday night at 5:30 p.m. to a home-court crowd.
